Everything you write is probably true. There is one problem and that Medium is too self-centered around novels and publishing in the US. Thus your essay is about the books you read, publishers and editors read while ignoring the output of the rest of the world. A trip to the bookstores of Buenos Aires, Madrid or Mexico City might be enlightening to Americans and even Canadians.

Here in Vancouver we have only one (as in one bookstore) Chapters/Indigo which is a big box bookstore. We also have one (as in only one) very good used bookstore MacLeod’s which would compare favorably with NY’s The Strand. Reading seems to be a dying concern.

Some of the recent novels of Mexican poet Homero Aridjis (alas! untraslated) are cutting edge fabulous.

And how can we forget the Lincoln and Emily Dickinson novels of Newyorican Jerome Charyn
