I understand and like your essay. Perhaps it has all to do with the fact that my mother was a powerful woman as is my Canadian wife (we have been married 49 years). She is the adventurous one and the one who carries the financial pants.

But your essay brings to mind the concept of our pre-conceived ideas of sexuality and of what women are all about. I am now a retired magazine photographer and writer in Vancouver. Some years ago the editor of a staid Canadian publication called Books In Canada called me up from Toronto and said, “How would you like to photograph a 6ft tall lesbian? Her name is Jane Rule.”

As you can imagine I was a bit nervous waiting for this creature to arrive at my studio. Yes, she was tall, but she was also charming. I took the best photographs ever taken of Jane Rule. After the session she said, “Alex I have terrible arthritis. This is why I am not going to write anymore. Could you hold my hand going down the stairs and flag me a taxi?

There is that cliché that a lady is a woman who makes a man feel he is a gentleman. This 6th ft tall lesbian did just that!
