Joanne Dahl — Photograph Alex Waterhouse-Hayward

When I taught photography I used to tell my students that the formula of having a model in a studio with: 1. A backdrop 2. Your model 3. Your light 4. Your camera (perhaps like in my case on a tripod) 5. You meant that you had five parallel lines of people and stuff that would never meet or as one says in plane geometry, converge.

And yet I am always amazed how that formula, a formula for almost certain failure, every once in a while produces an image like this one that I took many years ago of a woman called Joanne Dahl.
